Here’s an extract from an interview with producer, Rick McCallum:

Rick McCallum was the producer of the Star Wars Special Editions in 1997, and the prequel trilogy released from 1999 to 2005. In an exclusive Insider interview, he recalls the behind-the-scenes challenges of making the movies.

The droid factory sequence in Attack of the Clones was a late addition to the movie. Does this add extra pressure?

George doesn’t start out saying, “Okay. This is exactly what I want to do.” He has to write it first, then he has to shoot it. But then when he takes it to the editing room, which is really what he loves more than anything, then he likes to play with it, and add more stuff to it.

We always have enough time in our pickups to be able to do what we always expect out of George, which is the unexpected. He likes to start a conversation the same way, whether he’s in the editing room or when he comes on the set. Part of you wants to groan, but it’s thrilling and it’s electric. He will say, “Wouldn’t it be a great idea if we did this…” or, “You know, I was thinking about it last night; wouldn’t it be fun to do this…?” or “People would never believe it if we did this…?” or, “Wouldn’t it be great…?” That’s how he likes to talk, and then you just say, “Oh, okay, fine, let’s do it!”

Which was the hardest prequel to make?

Attack of the Clones. It was the biggest risk because we decided to do every single thing digitally, from acquisition and shooting the picture, all the way to distribution. There was no plan B. We just had faith that it would work…
